Week 9 My last post

I can't believe this is my last post. I learned a lot of things through this programme. Some of them I thought very useful like newsreader, LibraryThing, Delicious, online productivity tools and of course eBooks and eAudioBooks, some of them I didn't think I would use often like Twitter, Technorati or Rollyo but it was good to know they existed. This has been an interesting journey for me and thanks to everyone who set up this programme and read my blogs even though they weren't very interesting. Now I need to think what I am going to do tonight, bye..

Week 9 eBooks and eAudio books

Today I looked at eBooks and eAudio books. TumbleReadables seemed fun for kids to read along and the Tumble Quiz would make sure the children understand the story. I had seen a lot of children use it in our library. I thought Downloadable media was quite good for those who spent a lot of time on the road and the best of all, they didn't need to pay $3 for each item. On NetLibrary, I created a free account and added 5 books to my favourites but I wasn't too keen on the netLibrary. I didn't like reading a big fat book in front of a computer, that would be tiring (I'm lazy). Also I found page search function on NetLibrary wasn't working. When I entered a page number to search, it came up a message saying "The requested page could not be found".

Week 9 Podcasts

Today I looked at Podcasts. Podcast.net and Yahoo Podcasts were no longer available. I searched on podcastalley.com using key words "library news", there were 200 results for it. I tried to listen to a couple of them but the sound kept breaking up. I then subscribed salt lake county library's podcast to my Bloglines account, just wanted to know what was happening in the library which was on the other side of the world.

Week 9 YouTube

Today I looked at You Tube. You Tube is a video sharing website that allows users upload and share videos. Its a great way to broadcast yourself and its all free. The video I chose for my blog called "This is China". I chose this video because I came from China and I thought this video showed the best of China.

Week 8 Web 2.0 Tools

Today I looked at some Web 2.0 sites, mainly Lulu and Biblio. Lulu was a self publishing website. It was for writers who would like to put their work in a book. I wouldn't have a book to publish anytime soon (maybe never), so I had a look on Biblio as well. Biblio was a website for selling used, rare books. It looked like a perfect place for book collectors to find their beloved books which were out of print. It would be a good suggestion for our customers who wanted books that no longer available in our library.

Week 8 Online Produtivity Tools

Today I looked at some online productivity tools and created an account for myself in Zoho Writer, then wrote a test document. I found Zoho Writer was quite good because it was easy to use and it could be accessed from anywhere. Often we had patrons have problems opening their files on USB drive in our library because of compatible issues. If patrons used online productivity tools, they wouldn't have to worry about anything. Here is the link to my test document. The link didn't seem working. I copied the document from Zoho then pasted it to my Google Docs, ticked checkbox for my document and chose "get the link to share" from Share tab. It worked.

Week 7 PBwiki

This week I also looked at PBWiki, added my blog to Favourite Blogs page and added some movies I liked to Favourite Movies page. They were very easy and fun. I just logged on using ACL email address and password, found Favorite Blogs and clicked on Edit, then copied my blog URL and pasted to it. Done.

Week 7 Wikis

This week I looked at Wikis. I had been using Wikipedia quite a lot but I had never known that anyone could add information to or edit it! There must be some rules to follow if you wanted to add new facts because it was a encyclopedia and people trusted encyclopedias. I always found Wikipedia very useful. Also I thought Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki was useful for libraries. It provided a place for all the librarians in the world to share ideas and information. If we needed some fresh idea maybe we could get it from here.

Week 6 Library 2.0

This week I also read the perspectives on Library 2.0. I could see our libraries still play an important role in the community in the future because we kept up with new technologies which meant we kept up with our customers. This web 2.0 learning was a great way for me to learn some new technologies in order to serve our customers better.

Week 6 Technorati

This week I also created a Technorati account and looked around. Tried a keyword search for "Learning 2.0" in blog posts and came up 1 blog, in Blog Directory but no luck. Tried to claim my blog and I had to include this code "UJK22RXZFPX4" to my blog and publish it. Once I published, I should use the "Verify Claim Token" button to have my blog be verified. So now I will publish this blog and see.

Week 6 Del.icio.us

This week I created a Delicious account for myself. I found Delicious very useful since I worked as a part time Library Assistant and I didn't have my own computer in work place. Now all I needed to do was logging on my Delicious account on any available computer and I would have my bookmarks! Also I thought this website would be a great way to share information between libraries. Imaging if ACL had one account and all the valuable bookmarks were there, wouldn't that be convenient?

Week5 Rollyo

This week I also tried to use Rollyo, but a message came up saying Rollyo was undergoing some maintenance. I didn't want to stuck here, so I would carry on my Week 6 and try it later on.
Tried Rollyo again on Mar. 5, now it worked. I created an account for myself and created a search roll for "Favourite Kids Books". Then I followed the instruction from #12 and added searchroll to my blog, also added my LT Search Box and a display of my LT books to the side of my blog. My blog looked much better now (I think). For Rollyo, I wouldn't use it much because I preferred Delicious.

Week 5 LibraryThing

This week I explored LibraryThing and created my own LibraryThing account. This website was cool. I could use it to record my readings, like what I had read, what I wanted to read in the future, etc. Also this website provided a great platform for book lovers to interact with each other. I would highly recommend this website to my friends who couldn't live without books.

Week 4 RSS

I setup my googlereader, but for some reason I could only get to "logging in" page instead of my account. So now I setup a bloglines account and it seemed working. Hooray!

week4 part B

I also setup my Twitter account this week. I followed CNN breaking news (I guess there was no point to follow news since the newsreader could do the same) , penguinbooks and Jennifer Aniston who was my favorite actress. I wouldn't follow anybody myself because I thought it was a waste of time, but probably it was useful to some people if they wanted to keep up with their very closed friends or family.

Week 4 part A

This week I setup my googlereader on Gmail and subscribed a few RSS feeds. Most of them are from library website. I subscribed "new titles" by clicking RSS icon then adding to subscription on my reader, they were working fine. When I searched a certain author's books then tried to do the same thing, there was a message saying the search I entered didn't provide a feed but google reader could create a feed for me. Anyway, I thought RSS feeds were great ways to keep book lovers updated about our newly received books (I thought it would be awesome if customers could see not only the titles but the images as well) and I would definitely use it to save myself some time.

week 3 part B

Letter James was fun! I made a cake using Letter James the other day, then I made a link to my post, but when I tried to view it the second day, it was gone. I wasn't sure what happened. This time I made the cake and post on my blog, so it wouldn't disappear again.

Here is the picture

week 3 part A

This week was a busy week! I explored Flickr, found this little cute thing. It reminded me of my primary school friend's kitten, we had a lot fun with him back then.
I found this bookworm trading card from librarian trading card. I downloaded a baby reading photo from internet then made the baby reading trading card using trading card maker.
On Picnik, I picked a photo from the library, then added a text and a frame. The daisy frame looked lovely but it wasn't free. Here is my photo.

week 2

I visited Bebo, Facebook, Myspace and LinkedIn. Found a lot of people I know on Facebook. Surprise! Tried to find my high school friends from Facebook and Myspace, but no luck. Sad! To be honest, I am not comfortable to put my pictures online to share with thousands of others, at least not now. Am I too old-fashioned? Maybe.

This is the page I found on Bebo:

about week 1

This week I created a gmail account and a blogger account, played around. This learning program is fun but it took more time than I expected in my first week. It really surprised me that you could do so much on internet. I am sure I will be more helpful to our customers by the end of this program.
